RARE C.B. HOLDEN FALLING BLOCK SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF Long. SN 4. Very unusual single shot rifle with 26-1/8” semi-ovoid shaped oct bbl with thin blade front sight and 2-position ladder rear sight, typical of Holden. The bore has five lands and grooves, conventional rifling with left hand twist. The top tang has an integral base with 2-3/8” blade sight with small disk. The receiver shape is similar to the Frank Wesson falling block. This model utilizes a reverse toggle set up that when the lever is lowered. The bolt is articulated about the middle and pivots downward exposing the chamber. The right side of the bolt has the maker’s name and patent date of “1864”. It has a manual extractor on the left side, which extends up the bbl. The wood is very nicely figured American walnut with uncheckered forearm that has a pewter nosecap. It has a straight stock and crescent buttplate with faceted tang. The bottom of the bbl has two iron guides with an original iron ramrod. Accompanied by a copy of a brief biography of C.B. Holden. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl shows moderate to heavy wear with worn corners and a mottled silver-brown patina. Receiver retains about 60% dull old nickel finish. Wood is sound and retains most of a recent refinish. Action is a little sticky but functions. Strong bright bore with scattered fine pitting. 4-52807 JR640 (3,500-6,000)
