RARE SMALL SIZE C.B. HOLDEN TIP UP SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. Cal. 22. NSN. Unusual little rifle built like a single bbl shotgun with 18-7/8” oct to rnd bbl with tiny dovetailed blade front sight, a slot blank in the rear dovetail and with the top flat marked in script, “C.B. Holden Maker Worcester Mass”. The oct section of the bbl is apparently a sleeve over the round section. The bore has three wide lands and grooves, conventional rifle with right hand twist. The receiver is nickeled-brass with light foliate engraving on both sides, which extends onto the bbl and bbl reinforcements. The opening lever is on the right beside the hammer. It has an unusual nickeled cast brass tiny forearm that is also lightly engraved. The stock is straight grain American walnut with a long grip that is flat checkered, which extends up over the wrist and around the front of the grip. The grip cap is coarse checkered brass as is the buttplate. The top tang has an integral sight base, which contains a 2-1/4” blade with small eyecup. The tension spring is separate and attached to the frame. Accompanied by a copy of a brief biography of C.B. Holden. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl retains blue in sheltered areas with the balance a dark brown patina. Receiver retains about 85% original nickel with some flaking and pimpling and the forearm about 90% original nickel. Wood is sound with a couple of minor chips by the top tang and has minor storage and handling nicks and scratches with a gouge in the comb and retains most of its original varnish. Mechanics are fine, worn bore with scattered pitting. 4-52815 JR647 (2,500-4,000)
