FRANCOIS JOSEPH FREDERIC ROUX (French, 1805-1870) SHIP PORTRAIT OF THE “JAMES N. COOPER”. Watercolor marine scene shows the American ship “James N. Cooper” sailing left to right with some sails up. There are several men aboard and they are following a small sailboat with “H. 7.” on the sail. The ship has the American flag off the back mast, a star flag off the front mast and a ships pennant off the top of the middle mast. Another large ship is seen going away in the distance. The right side has a white bluff land peninsula with a small lighthouse. The black bottom border has a written legend “James N. Cooper Captn S. O. Flitner”. Housed in its original gilt decorated frame. Signed lower right in the bright blue water “Frederic Rouz Havre 1850”. On back of the original backing board is the following; believed to be in the artist’s hand: “Frederic Roux Hydrographer & Peintre de Marine au Havre en Jevrive 1850”. There also is a typed label with history of the ship as follows: “Ship Jas. N. Cooper, 549 tons Built at Pittston, Maine 1844. Owned 1848 by William V. Kent of Boston and James N. Cooper and Joseph Varney of Pittston…”. SIGHT SIZE: 16-1/4” x 22-1/2”. CONDITION: Generally good. Brown toned paper throughout. 9-29187 (2500-4000)
