VERY RARE, UNIQUE C.B. HOLDEN TIP-UP MID-RANGE TARGET RIFLE. Cal. About 40 CF that has a medium length tapered straight case. NSN. The caliber may use a Remington case as it has a radius in the rim area of the chamber. It is similar to an early single bbl shotgun with a unique thumb lever latch on the right side of the hammer. It has a 28” oct to rnd bbl with Holden’s typical large square base windage front sight with globe aperture and the dovetail for a rear sight on the top flat. The top flat is marked in script “C.B. Holden, Maker, Worcester Mass.” The oct section is nickel plated and has reinforcements around the lug area. It appears that the round section is steel and the oct section is a brass over-sleeve. The round part of the bbl is uniquely spiral knurled, apparently an early attempt at glare reduction. The bore has the twelve-groove Metford style rifling with right hand twist. It also has a unique cast brass splinter forearm. The receiver is nickeled brass, lightly embellished on the sides and other small areas with foliate and arabesque patterns. It has a rather unique integral tang sight base with separate tension spring screwed to the frame. It contains a 3-3/4” vernier blade with large eyecup. It has Holden’s typical long grip stock with nickeled grip cap, checkered in coarse patterns with fine criss-cross pattern on the front and has a coarse checkered nickeled brass buttplate. Accompanied by a copy of a brief biography of C.B. Holden. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Iron portion of the bbl retains 75-80% original brown finish with scattered spots of rust. Oct brass portion of the bbl retains 90-95% original nickel, bright and shiny in the sheltered areas, milky on top. Receiver retains 85-90% strong original nickel and the forearm about 50% nickel. Buttstock has a hairline on each side back of the receiver and has light handling and use marks and retains most of its bright original varnish. Buttplate retains about 95% original nickel. Mechanics are fine, brilliant shiny bore. 4-52804 JR637 (5,000-10,000)
