EXTREMELY RARE C.B. HOLDEN BICYCLE RIFLE.

EXTREMELY RARE C.B. HOLDEN BICYCLE RIFLE. Cal. 25-20 Single Shot. NSN. Most unusual rifle with 18” stepped tapered rnd bbl with tiny dovetail front sight and no provision for a rear sight. The bore has nine lands and grooves, Metford style rifling with right hand twist. It is mounted in a spur trigger shotgun type receiver with the release on the right side of the hammer. It has a most unusual cast metal forearm that has a thumbscrew take down which, when unscrewed, releases a small center section allowing the bbl to be removed. Only a screw through the forearm retains the bbl. It has a long checkered curved grip of 1-pc walnut that has a nickeled dovetail butt which is slotted for a nickel plated brass skeleton stock. The stock has oval shaped top and bottom arms with an elliptical shaped crescent butt. The top tang has Holden’s typical integral sight base that contains a miniature round stem with tiny peep aperture at the top. The tension screw is separate and screwed to the frame. It is amazing to see the quality of workmanship in an item such as this, considering its age and the equipment available to the workman of that era. Accompanied by a copy of a brief biography of C.B. Holden and a copy of Mr. Owen’s inventory sheet. Mr. Owens’ inventory sheet lists an 18,” caliber 38 smoothbore bbl which, at the time of this writing, cannot be located. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl retains about 95% strong bright original blue with a few light scratches. Receiver and forearm retain most of their slightly muted, but still very bright case colors. Grip shows light wear and retains most of its original varnish. Stock retains about all of its original nickel plating. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-52816 JR650 (5,000-10,000)
