DENNIS MALONE CARTER (Irish/American, 1827-1881) CHECKER PLAYERS. Oil on canvas interior scene shows two gentlemen playing checkers at a one drawer table. One is drinking from a pewter flagon and the other is smoking a pipe. There is a woman and man next to an open window and a large hutch is seen behind players. Singed lower left “DM Carter” and dated “1865”. Housed in its original gold liner. Carter worked briefly in New Orleans and resided in New York City most of his life. SIZE: 21” x 27”. CONDITION: Repaired large tear, dirty with restoration needed. 9-70795 (1,800-2,200)
