PAINTED CIVIL WAR CANTEEN. Period Union metal canteen with antique painted scene depicting campsite, soldier and flag with the inscription “WM Wedgwood, 40th & 133rd N.Y.V” painted in a banner across the bottom. According to military records W. Wedgwood (William Wedgwood) was 36 years old (in 1861) he was born in Staffordshire, England and was listed as an artist and in some cases decorator. Research indicates that William Wedgwood was the son of Aaron and Thurza Wedgwood, and a nephew of Josiah Wedgwood, the renowned originator of the famed Wedgwood pottery and porcelain factory in the 18th cent., which exists to this day. The back of the canteen, the holding straps and spout are painted in gold. CONDITION: Several dents front and back with 20% loss to the paint. The scene and names are still intact.
