VERY RARE EXPERIMENTAL CARTRIDGE BOX. This 5-1/2” x 7-1/2” leather box was made at Watervliet Arsenal and is marked with a large letter “B” on the front flap. It consists of two layers of 25 Cal. 58 cartridges arranged in rows of 8/9/8. The top section is folded over the bottom retained by a strap using the same locking nut as the top flap. It is identified in the accompanying papers covering the equipment boards of 1873, 1874 & 1876 as being “Colonel Robert’s alteration of a muzzle-loading cartridge box, caliber, .58.”. It was exhibited along with other military equipment at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. CONDITION: Generally fine with some cracking on the flap and much cracking and loss of finish on the tie-down straps. FS61 4-48704 (2,000-3,000)
