RARE C.B. HOLDEN LONG RANGE CREEDMORE RIFLE. Cal. 45 2-7/8. SN 16. Fine long-range rifle with 32-1/8” tapered rnd bbl with large block front sight and an added rear dovetail at the receiver. The top is marked “C.B. Holden, Mfr. Worcester, Mass”. The bore has twelve lands & grooves that are Metford style rifling with right hand twist. It has a nickeled brass receiver with right side, front action lockplate and hammer and a dummy sideplate on the left side. The receiver has the unique falling block action with front lever, released by a spring-loaded button. It has a spring-loaded 2-pc firing pin with a unique top mounted manual extractor. The top front of the receiver is faceted with three flats and is uniquely engraved with foliate and arabesque very fine patterns. Identical patterns are at the tip of the top tang, on the bottom of the trigger guard, on the ball of the opening lever, forend cap and tang & toe of the buttplate. The center of the buttplate is engraved in criss-crossed lines. The lockplate and sideplate are lightly engraved with arabesque patterns and a scallop and dot border. It has 2-pc stock and forearm of very highly figured American walnut with checkered long forearm and stepped nickeled brass forend tip. The stock has a checkered long grip with conventional grip cap and an engraved smooth nickeled steel buttplate. The top tang is mounted with a unique tang sight base that has a 4” blade vernier sight with large eyecup. A nearly identical base is mounted on a comb at the heel. The trigger has a checkered tip. Accompanied by a copy of Mr. Owens’ hand written inventory sheet and a copy of a brief biography of C.B. Holden. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl retains a mottled silver-brown patina with some areas of fine surface rust. Front sight is missing its windage screw. Receiver retains 96-98% original milky nickel with a scattered nick or two. Lockplate and sideplate retain traces of original blue with the balance a blue-gray patina. Wood is sound with numerous small nicks and scratches and retains most of its original bright varnish.
