RARE C.B. HOLDEN SINGLE SHOT CREEDMORE RIFLE. Cal. appears to be about 40 with a medium length bottleneck case. NSN. Fine long-range rifle with 28-3/4” tapered rnd bbl with large block front sight. The top is marked, in script, “C.B. Holden Maker, Worcester, Mass” and there is a 1/4” wide knurled ring at the receiver end and a narrower band at the muzzle. The bore has twelve lands & grooves that are Metford style rifling, left hand twist. It has a nickeled brass receiver with right side, front action lockplate and hammer and a dummy sideplate on the left side. The receiver has the unique falling block action with front lever, released by a spring-loaded button. It has a spring-loaded 2-pc firing pin and is missing its unique top mounted manual extractor. The top front of the receiver is faceted with three flats and is uniquely engraved with foliate and arabesque very fine patterns. These dainty patterns are also on the top tang, bottom of the trigger guard and ball of the opening lever and firing pin bolster. The lockplates are beautifully engraved with about 50% coverage fine arabesque patterns with scalloped borders. It has very highly figured American walnut 2-pc stock and forearm with dbl diamond checkered round forearm and extended grip with engraved nickeled grip cap and a very fine checkered nickeled brass buttplate with light engraving on the tang. The tang sight base is missing. It has a Creedmore installation at the heel containing a 6” blade vernier sight with large eyecup. The threads in the eyecup socket are stripped. Accompanied by a copy of a brief biography of C.B. Holden. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains 93-95% strong original blue turning plum; the front sight is missing from the block. Receiver retains about 90% strong original nickel. Stock has a hairline by the top tang and a large scratch in the same area with other light handling and use marks and retains about 85-90% original oil finish. Forearm is sound and retains about 50% original oil finish. Mechanics are fine with brilliant shiny bore. 4-52812 JR631 (5,000-10,000)
