SIGNIFICANT AND UNIQUE COLLECTION FROM VIRGINIA GRANT AND MARY CRETICOS OF THE WOMEN’S AIRCORPS SERVICE PILOTS (WASP). This Collection of material from Virginia Grant and Mary Creticos is unique in that very little is available today regarding the women who formed the “WASP”, or Women’s Aircorps Service Pilots group. Ginny and Mary were friends and entered the WASP official training program at slightly different periods. Mary “washed out” and Ginny went on and won her wings in May, 1944. The Collection is rich in Ginny’s flying equipment, Flight School graduation certificate, photographs and clippings relating to her and her father who, after being a commissioned pilot in WW I, went on to command a Pennsylvania National Guard Squadron in the 1920s. Before winning her WASP wings, Ginny was a pilot in the Civil Air Patrol and her insignia from both units are contained in the group. Blue ring binder, clippings, photocopies, official letters, and two photo groups pertaining to Mary Creticos and Virginia Grant. N. Clipping scrapbook pertaining to Virginia Grant’s father, W.D. Grant, who was commissioned 1st Lt. in the Air Service in 1917. Post war he served as Major and Lt. Colonel commanding the 315th Air Reserve Squadron, Pennsylvania National Guard. Fair condition. O. Also included in this lot are: 10) DECORATED WEST POINT CADET BATHROBE. MEDIUM SIZE. NAMED TO CADET (?) LUCIDI. Robe is cadet grey, piped in yellow, with the West Point shield embroidered on the breast pocket. Covering the sleeves and back of the robe are over 90 American divisional and unit distinctive patches. Included are Airborne, Armored, Ranger, and Jungle Expert patches. A worthy collection of period patches nicely applied to the robe. 11) Material of James Molnar, R Company 774th Tank Destroyer Unit Molnar was the husband of Mary Creticos. Material contains photographs, clippings, a brief history and newsletter/reunion bulletins. All but the photographs are contained in a green three-ring binder. The photographs consist of 127 snapshot images, most taken overseas of places, people, war damage. Many are identified on the image and also by a typewritten list entitled “Memories of James J. Molnar.” Study of the list comparing it to the photographs identifies many unnamed pictures. A special view of a small tank destroyer battalion, the 774th, during its travels with General Patton and the Third Reich. CONDITION: 1) Fair. Some tears in collar. Right side of zipper is detached. Jacket, as with most B3s, is quite fragile. 2) As usually found, the fleece trousers are in better condition than the B3 jackets. Good to good plus. All zippers are intact as are the suspenders. Minor mildew spots are cleanable. 3) Good, but slightly misshapen from storage. Zippers are intact. No tears in the leather. 4) Good. Fleece-lined. No tears. Minor flaking to the leather. 5) Helmet shows wear with one 1-inch seam separation at the left rear. Marked “Army Air Forces”. 6)Fine. 7) Some rust spots and light stains. Lacks chinstrap buckle on the left side. No maker name or other identification. 8) Some rusting on frames. One lens is cracked. Rubber face piece is sound. 9) Overall very good with minor crazing on the edges of the lenses. No markings of any sort. 10) The patches are all excellent, but there are some moth holes in the robe. 11) Photographs and newsletter all are in fine condition. 4-32052 CSW1 (5,500-6,500)
