RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1876 LEVER ACTION MUSKET. Cal. 45-75. SN 4646. Very rare musket with 32” rnd bbl, Baker sights, which consists of a solid square base front sight/bayonet lug and a 900-yard ladder rear sight. It has impressed thumb print dust cover with screwed on rail. It is fitted with straight grain uncheckered American walnut wood, having a full-length forearm with an original iron, slotted-head ramrod in a groove on the left side. It has a straight stock with musket/carbine buttplate without trap. An original Winchester socket bayonet accompanies it. Also accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter identifying this musket with Baker sights and indicating shipment on May 19, 1879 with nine other arms to order 15473. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl retains 94-96% strong bright original blue with light wear from the bayonet at the muzzle, some scratches on top of the bbl and a rub spot just above the rear sight. Receiver retains 96-98% strong bright original blue with only minor sharp edge wear, a scrape around the sideplate screw head and a few minor pinpoints of rust. Dust cover has flaked to about 50%. Lever retains 60-70% muted mottled case colors and the hammer about 90%. Buttplate retains about 60% case colors, bright on the tang. Wood is sound with very minor handling and storage marks and a few dings on the forearm and retains most of its original bright oil finish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. Bayonet retains most of its original bright metal finish with scattered spots of surface discoloration. 4-52548 JR293 (20,000-35,000)
