ADA CLIFFORD MURPHY (American, 19th/20th Century) “THE OLD GARDEN”. Oil on canvas scene shows a neglected garden of an old gabled cottage, with rows of hollyhocks in full blossom, and a chicken coop at left beneath gnarled apple trees. Signed lower left “A. C. Murphy”. Back of frame has label from the Pennsylvania Academy of Art 59th Annual Exhibition and another label from Anderson Galleries and also an indication that it is from the collection of John Daly, sold at the American Art Association, 1907. Housed in what probably is its original gesso decorated fancy frame with gilt liner. Ada is wife of John Frances Murphy. SIZE: 9” x 14-3/4”. CONDITION: Inpainting, very good. 9-71534 (6,000-8,000)
