*ASSEMBLED RARE SAVAGE MODEL 1907 SEMI-AUTO PISTOL. SN 21. Cal. 45 ACP. Rare military pistol that never got beyond the experimental or testing stage with 5-1/4″ bbl, 1907 style slide completely without markings and an unfinished, unnumbered frame. It has unnumbered full checkered walnut wood grip panels and an unnumbered second type magazine with weld spots on back edge which have obliterated the serial number. Serial number “21” was observed under the bottom rear edge of the slide, the number “22” on the slide lock and the number “23” on magazine release. In all, 288 of these rare pistols were submitted to Springfield Armory for testing and were issued to three troops of cavalry between 1907 & 1911. In the final test of March 1911 the Savage was found unacceptable and not adopted by the Army. Serial numbers “22” and “23” were tested by Troop I of the 3rd Cavalry, of Fort Wingate, New Mexico and no record apparently exists of the serial numbers issued to the other two troops of cavalry. After the final report of the board of officers testing these pistols, the Chief of Ordnance directed they be recalled and returned to Springfield Armory for disposition. In all 185 Savage pistols were returned and after four were removed to be placed in military museums, the other 181 were sold back to The Savage Arms Company for a price of $1,636.00. Savage reconditioned these pistols with a matte blue finish and resold them on the open market. In the refinishing process the slide markings were removed leaving only a caliber marking. This pistol retains neither marking. Given the unfinished & unnumbered condition of the frame/receiver it appears that this may be a lunchbox special assembled & removed by a factory employee, probably during renovation process using some of the recycled parts. Reference U.S. Military Automatic Pistols 1894-1920, Meadows. CONDITION: Fine, as noted above. Slide retains 93-95% strong blue with strong fire blue on rear sight and recoil block. Frame is a medium smooth gray patina, still in the “white”. Grips are crisp & new with no hand oil staining. Magazine is cleaned bright with the aforementioned welded spots on back edge but seems to function fine. Mechanics are a little stiff & tight but fine & functional, brilliant shiny bore. 4-32020 JR233 (6,000-10,000)
