INSCRIBED COLT MODEL 1862 POLICE REVOLVER. SN 7995 on frame, bbl, wedge and arbor, 7985 on backstrap and trigger guard. Cal. .36, 6-1/2″ round bbl. Back of the cylinder is battered and no number is visible. Inscribed “Capt James Brown. 33rd Reg. Mass. I Vols”. Backstrap is battered at the bottom and the last is not clear. One chamber of the cylinder is split and has been welded. Documents accompanying give some history of the 33rd Massachusetts Infantry and show that Brown was appointed Captain in July of ’62 and Major in November of ’62. He resigned 11 May 1863. Brown was something of a hero, having captured a Confederate flag in Virginia in 1862. CONDITION: Brown patina overall with hints of color on the frame. Backstrap and trigger guard, have about 80% silver, worn and battered in the area of the inscription. Cylinder has been polished and aged in the area of the weld. 4-46228 (5,000-6,000)
