SCARCE REMINGTON MODEL 1873 WHITMORE GRADE 3 DAMASCUS LIFTER HAMMER DBL BBL SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 ga. SN 3873. Fine early Remington lifter with 30″ “London Pattern” Damascus steel bbls choked MOD/MOD with smooth concave rib, sgl bead & extractor. Receiver & lockplates are engraved in typical Grade 3 patterns of light arabesque flourishes & a zigzag border. It has the unusual feature of additional arabesque flourishes at the chamber end of the bbls & rib. Maker’s name is on the rib. Wood is very nicely figured American walnut with black insert, checkered, splinter forearm with wedge & straight stock, 13-3/4″ over a smooth steel buttplate. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbls retain 75-80% silver/brown Damascus pattern with scattered spots of fine surface rust toward the muzzle end. Receiver is mostly silvered casehardening & the lockplates retain 30-40% case colors in sheltered areas with the balance turned silver. Wood is sound showing moderate wear & retains most of a restored finish with light nicks & scratches. Buttstock checkering may have been freshened a long time ago. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bores with light pitting. 5-60468 JR192 (1,250-2,250)
