*EXTREMELY RARE REMINGTON SPECIAL GRADE DBL BBL SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 ga. SN 400005. One of only twelve of these fabulous shotguns ever built in the period 1899-1910. Of those twelve, only four are known and there are two of them in this auction. This shotgun has 30-5/16″ (orig length) Whitworth steel bbls choked FULL/FULL with concave, tapered rib fully engraved with oak leaf & acorn patterns, dbl ivory beads, rib extension for Greener crossbolt, ejectors & dbl triggers. Receiver with triple scallop rear edge, top lever, top tang & trigger guard are fabulously engraved with full coverage oak leaf & acorn patterns with game animals incorporated into the engraving. Left side has four woodcock, right side four ruffed grouse, floorplate has a running rabbit & a large vignette of a wolf-like animal carrying a deer. Each side of the receiver has a tiny ribbon with the maker’s name. Fences are wonderfully engraved with oak leaf patterns on the sides & a fabulous raised triple scallop shell. There is a raised scallop that encircles the back of each fence and wraps around the Greener crossbolt and splits toward the back edge of the receiver. Top lever has a tiny spaniel’s head with another spaniel’s head on a small button on the forearm that has a gold border. “SAFE” is in gold on the top tang and the trigger bow has the intertwined initials “RAco” in gold. Engraving patterns extend 2″ over the chamber area of the bbls & the aforementioned full length engraving on the top rib. It is mounted in highly figured marble cake French walnut with full checkered ribbon pattern splinter forearm & straight stock with checkered raised side panels, 14-1/4″ over an old leather faced pad. This exact shotgun is fully pictured & described on pp. 244-247 of Remington Dbl Shotguns, Semmer. Drop at the heel 2”, drop at the comb 1-1/4”. Bore restrictions: left – .025, right – .028. Weight: 7 lbs, 10.3 oz. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain about 95% of a professionally restored blue finish with light muzzle edge wear and some thinning over the forearm area. Receiver is mostly silvered case colors. Wood is sound with light to moderate nicks, scratches & bruises and retains about 80% orig oil finish. Forearm shows moderate to heavy wear and has a dark oil stained patina. Pad is collapsed with the base broken in two places. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bores. 5-60445 JR461 (30,000-50,000)
