PISTOL, COMMISSION CASE AND BILLFOLD IDENTIFIED TO BVT. BRIGADIER GENERAL NATHANIEL MICHLER, US”. Colt pocket M1849 five-shot revolver, 5” bbl. SN 45618. Matching SN are found on bbl, loading arm, wedge, arbor, cylinder, frame, trigger guard and backstrap. Traces of finish are visible in protected areas. Stagecoach scene on cylinder is about 100% present. Stocks exhibit 95% original varnish. Minor dings, dents and scratches are present on bbl housing and stocks. Silver on backstrap and trigger guard 90%+. Accompanying gun is commission case which is correctly painted, BVT. BRIGADIER GENERAL NATHANIEL MICHLER, UNITED STATES” in gold lettering over Japanning on case. Japanning about 30% present, gold lettering about 50% present. Small 19th Century billfold, red Moroccan lettering. Painted inside is “NATHANIEL MICHLER”. Michler was a significant figure before, during and after the civil War. He was an Army officer and geography, the son of Peter S. and Elizabeth (Hart) Michler. One of his earlier assignments was the reconnaissance of the country between Corpus Christi and Uvalde, Texas. After various promotions, in 1860 he served as Chief Topic graphical Engineer in surveys for the canal from the Gulf Darrien to the pacific ocean. During the war, one of his assignments was with the Army of the Potomac and charged of re-surveying Harper’s Ferry, where he and his men detailed reconnaissances and built defensive works for the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsavania, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. In April of 1865 he was breveted Colonel for his service during siege of Petersburg, VA, and later Brig. General. After the war in 1866, he was chosen to select a site for the Presidential mansion and he later helped prepare plans for the new War Department building. 4-48864 JS16 (2,000-2,500)
