WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 LEVER ACTION MUSKET. Cal. 44 RF Henry. SN 133088. Standard musket with 27” rnd bbl, Baker sights, which consist of square base front sight/bayonet lug and musket ladder rear sight. It has 7/8-magazine with three bands, the middle of which has a sling loop with corresponding loop in the butt stock. The wood is straight grain American walnut with 3/4-length forearm and straight stock with brass buttplate with trap that contains a 4-pc original brass and iron-wiping rod. There is 3/4” diameter cartouche by the left heel that contains the initials “AOS”. There is also a small riband on the bottom of the stock below the lower tang with the same initials. No indication what these cartouches signify. Accompanied by an original blued socket bayonet. Also accompanied by a Winchester Museum card identifying this musket and indicating that it was shipped December 20, 1876. CONDITION: About fine. Bbl and magazine tube retain 85-90% original factory blue with scattered light surface rust. Receiver has sharp edges with only minor nicks and scratches and retains a medium mustard patina. Forearm is cracked near the tip, otherwise the wood is sound showing moderate to heavy wear with a scrape by the right bbl channel and usual handling and use marks and retains a dark hand rubbed patina. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore with some minor orange peel pitting near the chamber end. Bayonet retains 20-30% blue with light surface pitting and patina. 4-52922 JR399 (4,000-7,500)
