SCARCE GRADE 4 (C GRADE) DAMASCUS DBL BBL HAMMER SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 ga. SN 34936. Fine, top lever Damascus dbl built on a #1 frame with 32″ Bernard steel bbls, choked MOD/IMP-CYL with smooth rib, sgl bead & doll’s head extension. Receiver & lockplates are beautifully engraved with vignettes of two pointers & a partridge in a field scene on the left side, two setters & two quail in a field scene on the right side & a large rnd vignette of a pointer on point in a woodland scene, all surrounded by about 60% fine foliate arabesque patterns & foliate borders. Fences have dbl scalloped relief pattern on the sides with deep scallop recesses over the firing pins. Wood is nicely figured American walnut with checkered splinter forearm & straight stock with teardrop side panels, 14-1/2″ over a skeleton buttplate with checkered center. Accompanied by a Parker letter fully identifying this shotgun and indicating shipment on Oct. 3, 1883 to James Elles of Hamburg, Ontario, Canada with the notation “4-7/8″ AROUND AT THE WRIST”. Its cost was $150.00. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain 96-98% strong orig brownish pattern with light muzzle edge wear, possibly an old restoration. Receiver retains traces of case colors in the sheltered areas with the balance faded to a bright silver. Lockplates & hammers retain about 50% faded case colors. Trigger guard is cleaned bright. Wood is sound & retains most of a professionally restored finish. Opening lever sometimes will not hold in the open position, otherwise mechanics are fine.
