VERY RARE ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 LEVER ACTION MUSKET.

VERY RARE ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 LEVER ACTION MUSKET. Cal. 44 RF Henry. SN 134957. Wonderful full nickel plated, Ulrich engraved musket with 27” rnd bbl, square base front sight/bayonet lug, early 900 yard ladder rear sight, known as the “Baker” sight. It has full magazine with walnut stock and 2/3-length forearm. It has three bbl bands with the middle having a sling loop with corresponding musket base and sling loop in the buttstock. The receiver is beautifully engraved in typical Ulrich fashion with the vignette of a standing elk on the left side surrounded by foliate arabesque patterns with a flower in the center of scrolls on each side. The right side has only foliate arabesque patterns and the top of the receiver, behind the hammer, tip of the lower tang, buttplate tang and mirror image patterns by the lifter are engraved to match and all have very fine punch dot background. No signature was observed in or around the engraving, but this exact rifle is pictured, in color, on page 93 of Winchester Engraving by R.L. Wilson wherein he has identified it as Ulrich engraved. Also pictured on page 110 of THE WINCHESTER BOOK by Madis is an identical musket with serial number 134958, which is consecutive to this rifle. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter identifying this musket including nickel finish and engraving and indicates that it was shipped March 24, 1877 with 345 other arms to order #8365. Also accompanying is an original Winchester socket bayonet without scabbard. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Overall retains 93-95% strong bright original nickel-plating with some minor losses on the magazine tube and a spot or two on the bbl. Upper and lower tangs and rear edges of the receiver have some slight pimpling to the nickel. Right front flat of the receiver has some scattered flaking exposing the brass underneath. There are other small spots of pimpling around the receiver. Loading gate retains about 60% original nickel and the buttplate 85-90%. Wood is sound with the forearm having two or three deep bruises and a couple of scratches with a dark oil stained patina. Buttstock retains most of an old refinish. Left rear side of the receiver has about a 1/4” nick. Mechanics are fine, brilliant shiny bore. Bayonet retains 80-90% bright original polish with some pitting on the socket and fine etching in two spots on the blade. 4-52539 JR284 (15,000-25,000)
