PARKER D GRADE DAMASCUS HAMMER DBL BBL SHOTGUN. Cal. 16 ga. SN 51893. Built on an “O” frame with dbl lightning cuts in the water table and 27″ Damascus steel bbls (reduced to this length) with matted rib, sgl bead & doll’s head extension. Rib has the additional inscription “G.S. JUDD MAYSVILLE KY”. Receiver & lockplates have typical early “D” style engraving with bird dogs & birds on each side & the vignette of three quail on the front bottom & another quail on the trigger plate. Wood is beautifully figured flame grain American walnut with checkered splinter forearm, 13-1/2″ over a skeleton buttplate with checkered center. Accompanied by a Parker letter & numerous research papers regarding Mr. Judd. Parker letter identifies this shotgun with a 28″ bbl and the special request of the rib engraving. It was shipped Dec. 31, 1887 to Powell & Clement of Cincinnati, OH. Some of the research identifies Mr. Judd as a lawyer in Maysville. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Retains about all of a fine restored finish to metal & wood with some minor light pitting on the left lockplate. Case colors by Turnbull. Stock has a crack over the left lockplate & a replaced chip at the heel and seems to have shrunk or possibly the lower tang is bent as the wood to metal fit has gaps. Opening lever is a little sticky and the bbls do not seem to latch down properly, otherwise mechanics are fine. Moderately pitted bores. 5-60493 JR160 (1,000-2,000)
