ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 LEVER ACTION SADDLE RING CARBINE. Cal. 44 RF Henry. SN 127067. Rare engraved carbine with 20” bbl, full magazine, integral front band and sight with 2-position flip rear sight and a staple and ring in the left side of the receiver. It has uncheckered wood, straight stock and carbine buttplate with trap containing a 3-pc brass and iron-wiping rod. The receiver, upper & lower tangs and buttplate tang are engraved in typical Ulrich patterns with about 60% coverage, beautiful arabesque patterns, surrounding a round vignette of a standing elk on the left side and an open scroll like panel on the right side. It has straight-line borders and punch dot background with a fine scallop and dot border around the front and back edges. The top of the receiver, top tang, buttplate tang and tip of the lower tang are engraved to match. The metal is entirely nickel-plated. The factory letter from the Cody Firearms Museum verifies these features and shows that it was shipped February 25, 1876. CONDITION: Very fine. Metal retains what appears to be a very old, probably factory, re-nickel finish. Hammer, trigger, lever, loading gate and bolt appear to have original nickel plating and the lever has several spots of moderate to heavy pitting. Receiver has exposed brass on the lower edges and at the edge of the front scallops. There is a small spot of pitting on the magazine tube. Otherwise it retains most of this fine plating. Wood is sound with a couple of heavy gouges by the toe and some light gouges on the comb, otherwise retains a dark hand rubbed finish. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-52538 JR283 (15,000-30,000)
