RARE ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 LEVER ACTION RIFLE.

RARE ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF Henry. SN 21225. Early Henry marked ’66 with 24-1/4” oct bbl, full magazine, half-nickel front sight and Henry style ladder rear sight. It has nicely grained American walnut wood, uncheckered with straight stock and crescent brass buttplate with trap, which contains a 4-pc iron and brass-wiping rod. The receiver, forend cap and buttplate tang are very nicely engraved in Nimschke style with about 60% coverage beautiful arabesque patterns and has identical panels on both sides of the receiver with Nimschke’s trademark demon head incorporated into the engraving. The engraving has fine punch dot background. The top of the receiver is typically engraved in Nimschke style, which extends around the hammer slot and down the top tang. The carrier has the rare engraved marking “44 CAL.”. The brass parts are factory gold plated with some nickel showing through. It is fitted with factory sling swivels. Accompanied by seven pages of letters, correspondence between a Mr. F.P.L. Mills and Thomas E. Hall, curator of the Winchester Firearms Museum, some of which discusses this rifle. All are dated May to September 1953. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl retains 85-90% strong bright original blue with muzzle and edge wear and a few scattered spots of light rust. Magazine tube retains 92-93% original blue. Receiver retains generous amounts of original gold plating and has fine crisp edges with a few scattered, very minor nicks and scratches and a few peen marks on the carrier. Forend cap and buttplate retain traces of original plating. Wood is sound with minor nicks, scratches and bruises with a small gouge on the forearm and both stock and forearm retain most of their original bright piano varnish finish. Mechanics are fine with a strong bright bore and light pitting. 4-52455 JR245 (30,000-50,000)
