HISTORIC REMINGTON POLICE REVOLVER. SN 868. Cal. .36. 4-1/2” oct. bbl. Comes with a letter from Stuart Weitzel to his son, giving him his great grandfather’s “Pistol from the Civil War”. It is identified by serial number. Accompanying documents identifies Weitzel’s career from his appointment to West Point through the Civil War where he served in several campaigns including New Orleans, Texas and Richmond. The great grandfather, Godfrey Weitzel, rose to Major General and acted as Commandant of Engineers over the city of Richmond at the end of the war. Contrary to the popular phrase, “Godfrey Weitzel was the General who took Richmond, VA, not Grant. He met the next day with President Lincoln, and when he asked what should be done with the residents of Richmond, Lincoln said “If I were in your position, General, I think I would let them up easy”. There is considerable mention of Weitzel’s service to the Lee family after the war. CONDITION: Blue-gray patina with signs of filing and cleaning. Some moderate pitting remains on the frame and cylinder with vise marks on the bbl and lever. The lever retaining stud is a replacement. Comes with a modified WWI holster. 4-48353 (5,000-10,000)
