RARE ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 LEVER ACTION RIFLE.

RARE ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF Henry. SN 38058. Fine early Winchester marked rifle with 24-1/4” oct bbl, full magazine, Beach’s front sight and fixed rear sight. It also has a mid-range tang sight. It is fitted with highly figured American walnut stock and forearm and brass buttplate with trap. The receiver, forend cap and buttplate tang are beautifully engraved in typical Ulrich style with full coverage side panels and Moorish designs in the front recesses of the receiver. The engraving consists of fine foliate and arabesque patterns with three arches at the front edge on the left side plate and an open panel on the left sideplate. The right side engraving is nearly identical with a smaller open panel in the center. The top of the receiver is also engraved which extends down over the top tang. The forend cap is simply engraved in a foliate pattern and the buttplate tang with a simple geometric pattern. All of the engraving has a very fine punch dot background. No signature was observed. The stock and forend cap are fitted with factory sling swivels. Accompanied by an undated letter to Mr. Owens from Larry Jones of Denver, CO transferring a small piece of typewritten paper and a hand written note from Mr. Graham Mott. The hand written note is addressed to Larry and apologizes for a delay in getting “some history on the Winchester 66”. The typewritten note indicates that Mr. Mott’s ancestor, who appears to have been his great-grandfather, purchased this rifle while residing in Chicago. The rifle was passed down through the family until 1944 when it came into the possession of Graham Mott from whom Mr. Jones purchased it and subsequently sold it to Mr. Owens in 1992. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl and magazine tube retain 93-95% glossy original blue with a small chemical stain near the front sight and some light muzzle and edge wear. Receiver has slightly worn edges with the engraving still fine and crisp. Wood is sound with minor nicks and scratches and retains most of its fine original oil finish. Mechanics are fine, strong bore with lots of shine and scattered light pitting. 4-52456 JR246 (30,000-50,000)
