PHENOMENAL LINCOLN CARRIAGE EXHIBIT. This is one of the “models” used in the “History of American Transportation” exhibit created by Messmore & Damon, first displayed in 1930. The exhibit, which took 2 years and $150,000 to create, consisted of 10 tableaux or dioramas depicting important American moments and modes of transportation. Approximately 200 artisans were employed to complete the exhibit. This model was used in the diorama of President Lincoln’s State Carriage. Consisting of a canvas covered gray painted wooden base and a beautifully crafted carriage, which is believed to be an accurate scale model. It is made of wood, iron, brass and leather with its top constructed of dyed silk cloth. It is pulled by two full bodied horses made in Messmore & Damon’s taxidermy department. Messmore & Damon were well known for their exhibit displays, which included major exhibits made for the Chicago World’s Fair. The most famous of these was their famous prehistoric dinosaur exhibit “The World a Million Years Ago”. SIZE: Carriage measures approx. 56” l x 24-1/4” h x 27-1/2” w. Horses approx. 28-1/2” h.
