IDENTIFIED WHITNEY POCKET MODEL PERCUSSION REVOLVER. Cal. 31 perc. Fifth type revolver with 5” oct. bbl. with loading rammer and etched cylinder with two piece walnut grips. This revolver was reportedly the property of William Henry Beck who served from 16th April 1861 through 28th February 1863 with various Illinois units in the Civil War and was a 1 Lt. when he resigned. He re-enlisted as a 2 Lt. In the 10th cavalry in 1867 (the famous buffalo soldiers for 20 years) and eventually retired as Brigadier General April 8th, 1905. This revolver is accompanied by a file containing his military service record and numerous other papers, as well as a reproduction of a photograph of him as a captain in the 10th cavalry. It is also accompanied by a letter dated June 26, 1959 from Genevieve Middleton of Culver, IN., to Dr. Robert O. Koehler of St. Petersburg, FL., describing this revolver and a Colt Dragoon and stating that both have “Original Loads”. This revolver is still loaded in all five chambers. There is an accompanying note that appears to be in the same hand that states “The Eli Whitney was / Property of W. H. Beck / Grandfather of Genevieve Beck/Middleton”. This is an extremely fine grouping of historical data relating to Gen. Beck, detailing his entire military career from 1861 through 1905, plus correspondence from his widow seeking a widow’s pension. SN 10296. CONDITION: Good to very good. The barrel retains about 50% bright original blue alternating with brown patina and light surface rust. The frame, cylinder and grip frame, retain a silver/brown patina with some light surface rust. The cylinder retains 30-40% original scene. The cylinder, as previously noted, is still loaded. The loading rammer screw is battered and the lock screw is broken. Of necessity, the mechanics and bore were not examined. 4-48924 JR719 (2,500-3,500)
