RARE AND UNIQUE CLEVELAND WAR INDUSTRIES CIRCUS PARADE. Second quarter 20th century. Cleveland War Industries founded in 1918, representatives of local companies brought together in the War effort. This is probably a representative presentation piece. Parade is led by fanciful chariot carrying the “King and Queen” followed by large circus wagon led by team of six horses on which is mounted a ten piece band on the side of which are banners reading “CLEVELAND WAR INDUSTRIES” and “The GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH”. Wagon additionally mounted with American flag. Followed by a clown and a group of three metal elephants accompanied by a keeper. Elephant bodies cast with maker’s inscriptions “THE NORTH AMERICAN MFG. CO CLEVELAND, OHIO”. All mounted on a wood stand. Second half of parade comprised of five parade cages on wheels with sheet copper & brass ornamentation, all within a fenced area. Each display with plaque identifying the title of the subject and the name of company who fabricated it. Example: “SEA SERPENT/Habitat/Reliance Gauge Column Co.” All mounted on wood plaque. Third piece is a fanciful African village compound peopled by Natives with spears and shields, two giraffes, a lion, a serpent, etc. Fourth piece is a desert scene with military airplane in front of rows of fuel cans with stylized Art Deco influenced military figure centering the montage. Fifth piece an inkwell in the form of a Canadian National Railroad coal car or tender. SIZE: Overall: 61″ l of each. Village: 17″ x 27-1/2″. Air Strip: 16″ x 19-1/4″. Tender: 6-1/2″ h x 13″ l x 6-1/2″ w. PROVENANCE: Robert Frederick Woolworth Estate, Monmouth, Maine. (F.W. Woolworth Store). CONDITION: Several small elements now absent and overall in need of cosmetic repair and adjustment. Village scene missing tops of huts, otherwise in need of cosmetic restoration. Desert air strip believed to be missing an airplane. Tender missing strip of simulated coal, otherwise with original surfaces. 9-23559 (1,000-2,000)
