*PARKER BHE GRADE DAMASCUS DBL BBL SHOTGUN 2 BBL SET. Cal. 16 ga. SN 125859. Built on a #1 frame with 30″ Damascus steel bbls choked IMP-MOD/IMP-MOD with matted rib, sgl bead, and doll’s head extension, ejectors & dbl triggers. Receiver is beautifully engraved with foliate & floral patterns not usually found on a “B” grade. It has about 75% coverage with fine border patterns & the maker’s name in a ribbon on each side. There is a sgl raised rib behind each fence. Water table has Belgian proofs. Wood is highly figured English walnut with full checkered beavertail forearm & pistol grip stock with raised checkered fleur-de-lis side panels, 14-3/8″ over an Old English pad. Forearm may be a replacement. Grip cap has a large gold oval with engraved medallion. Accompanied by a Parker letter indicating shipment on July 5, 1905 to Simmons Hardware, St. Louis, MO. It originally had 28″ Damascus bbls and was part of a 12-gun order “TO BE DISPLAYED AT THE ST. LOUIS WORLD’S FAIR IN 1904”. A notation in the stock book states “SHOW GUN”. Orig LOP was 14-1/4″ with a 2-3/8″ drop at the heel and weighed 6 lbs. 8 oz. Also accompanying are three pages of invoices & correspondence between Mr. Parker & the renowned engraver & restoration artist, Neil Hermsen of Louisville, NC. Apparently when Mr. Parker purchased this shotgun it was fitted with steel bbls and he requested Mr. Hermsen to find & fit a pair of Damascus bbls, which he apparently did. These bbls were refitted & renumbered to match this frame. Steel bbls are 28″ choked FULL/MOD with matted rib, sgl bead, doll’s head extension & ejectors. They are Belgian proofed & apparently are a Belgian made replacement with engraving about 1-3/4″ over the chamber ends. Ejectors in the Damascus bbls appear to be hand made and do not fit precisely (probably a retrofit). Drop at the heel 2-1/2″, drop at the comb 1-3/8″. Weight: 6 lbs. 15.8 oz. CONDITION: Very fine. As completely restored by Mr. Hermsen including the Damascus bbls & recutting the engraving. Case colors restored by Turnbull. Stock has a hairline back of the top tang, otherwise the wood is sound and retains most of its professionally restored finish. 5-60478 JR148 (2,500-5,000)
