IMPORTANT CLASSICAL EMPIRE MAHOGANY CHEST OF DRAWERS WITH MIRROR. Mid 19th century, probably New York. The rectangular mirrorplate within an ogee molded surround suspended between two massive turned columns with leafy capitals mounted with accordion brass candle arms, the columns joined to a glove box fitted with a pair of aligned short drawers with cyma curved fronts, stepped back on the rectangular white Carrara marble top above a conforming case fitted with an arrangement of four long drawers; the uppermost with half-round drawer front, flanked by massive S-curved pilasters raised on spool feet. SIZE: Approx. 80″ h x 43″ w x 25″ d. PROVENANCE: Connecticut family home which descended from Sarah Upson Goodrich (Mrs. Oliver R. Beckwith) who descended from the Rev. Charles Chauncey, President of Harvard College and Elder William Brewster. Sarah was a member of the Connecticut chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. CONDITION: With all original surfaces. Columns in need of repolishing, with restoration needed to some leaf tips. Overall good. 9-21872 (1,000-2,000)
