UNIQUE VOLCANIC PISTOL CARBINE. Cal. 22. SN: 1467. 9-3/4” part octagonal bbl, marked “NEW HAVEN CONN. / PATENT FEB. 14, 1854” on the top flat. The round front portion of the bbl has an octagonal ring at the back, which retains and acts as a locking surface for the magazine cover. The bolt head is tiny, just wide enough for a .22 cal. cartridge. The cartridge elevator is the same size. The magazine tube, integral with the bbl, appears to be approximately .31 cal. but that cartridge will not fit in the lifter. The follower and spring are missing. The iron stock is attached with a single screw and a small pin that fit in the bottom of the grip strap, the same set up as on the backstrap of the larger Volcanic pistol carbines. The engraving is identical on both sides of the frame and is unlike that found on most volcanics. Eldon bought this gun at a barn sale in Claremont. It was sold to him as having been made by B. Tyler Henry for his grandson. Henry was originally from Claremont and Henry’s great-grandson owned the farm on which the sale was held. CONDITION: Mellow patina on the brass. Octagonal portion of the bbl appears to have a Damascus pattern. Round part is a rust/brown. There is bright blue on the sides of the hammer and traces of color on the lever, which is mostly a rust/brown patina. Grips are worn at the high spots and left one has a crack at the heel. Both retain about 90% of the varnish. Mechanically excellent. 4-52466 FS85 (15,000-25,000)
