EXTREMELY FINE DIETER DBL BBL SHOTGUN. SN4064. 16 ga. 29-1/2” Damascus bbls. “L. Dieter in Munchen” is inlaid in gold on top of the bbl. There is also gold inlaid decoration at the rear of the rib and bbls. The Damascus pattern on the rib is different than that on the bbls. The bbls are much finer. The other parts are also highly decorated. The left side of the buttstock is carved in relief with two foxes in a forest scene. The metal parts all have scroll and boarder engraving. The top tang has a seven-point crown above a shield containing two castle towers in gold on a raised surface. There is also a seated dog finely engraved in an oval & bordered by gold. The left lockplate has two running chamois bordered by gold. The left frame has two chamois bucks facing off for combat with more chamois in the distance also surrounded by gold. The right lockplate has a gold surrounded vignette with animals at rest, and the right frame the same animals grazing in a fenced field. The patchbox has a stag crossing a wooded stream & the trigger guard has a fox in its den. There is a carved horned pistol grip at the rear of the trigger guard. Sling swivels have been installed at the bottom of the stock and bbl. Both triggers are of the sgl set variety. CONDITION: Smooth gray patina overall with widely scattered light pitting. Heavy cheek piece has three, natural grain cracks but all remain solid. Otherwise, the wood has minor handling marks & the horn pistol grip also has two natural cracks. Two repaired cracks under the left lockplate. 4-57174 FS57 (2,250-3,000)
