*RARE CASED BOSS DBL BBL SHOTGUN. Cal. 20 ga. SN 7738. Spectacular Boss with 28″ bbls choked MOD/IMP-CYL with smooth, tapered, concave rib, sgl bead, dbl lump with ejectors & dbl triggers. Bbl flat is marked with usual proofs for 7/8 oz. and 2-1/2″ chambers, which have not been opened. It is mounted with extremely beautiful highly figured French walnut with checkered splinter forearm and straight stock with teardrop side panels, 14-1/4″ over a checkered butt. Receiver, lockplates, trigger guard, opening lever & forend iron are all engraved in extremely beautiful English rose & scroll patterns with about 80% coverage. Top tang has “SAFE” in gold. Both lockplates have the maker’s name. Bottom of the stock has an unused initial plate. Accompanied by a copy of the orig order dated “4th April 1930” to Mrs. Van S. Merle-Smith. Order, in addition to the shotgun specifications, indicates that it should be engraved “K.F. M-S” and that it was shipped to K.F. Merle-Smith, Oyster Bay, NY with a case. It lists the specifications as two triggers, 20 bore, 28″ bbls, weight of 5 lbs. 7 oz. and a drop of 1-7/8″ & 1-3/8″ with a length of 14-3/8″ and a 1/8″ cast-off. Also accompanied by an orig Boss brown leather, burgundy felt-lined trunk case compartmented for the gun, a square Boss oiler bottle and two Purdey snap caps. It has the maker’s label in the lid & the initials “G.W.C.” embossed on the top. Given that the length of pull is different from the specifications and that the case is probably not orig to this gun and also that the initial plate is not engraved it appears that it has been re-stocked. Drop at the heel 2-1/8″, drop at the comb 1-3/8″. Bore restrictions: left – .012, right – .005. Weight: 6 lbs. 9 oz. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbls retain virtually all of a fine factory re-black. Receiver & lockplates retain 75-80% orig case colors, primarily on the lockplates, with the fences & bottom of the receiver turned silver. Trigger guard retains about 90% orig blue, thinned about the middle. Buttstock is crisp with sharp edges & clean checkering and appears new. Forearm retains most of its factory-restored finish. Lining in the lid of the case is replaced and it has three replaced corner reinforcements with nicks, scratches & dings but remains fine. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bores. 4-55278 JR581 (25,000-35,000)
