MASSIVE J. & W. TOLLEY SGL BBL UNDER LEVER ELEPHANT RIFLE. Cal. 4 bore. SN 6545. Exceptionally large sgl shot rifle with 36-1/4″ Damascus rnd, smoothbore bbl with bead front sight and 2-leaf platinum-line express rear sight mounted on a short, wide, serrated rib. It has a doll’s head extension with dbl bite & extractor. Maker’s name & address is on top of the bbl. It is mounted in very highly figured English walnut with coarse checkered, rnd, horn-tipped forearm and massive pistol grip stock, 14-1/4″ over a crystallized solid red pad. Grip cap is serrated carved horn. Receiver has a fine wavy line border decoration & the lockplate a wavelet border, otherwise metal is unadorned. It has a right side mounted back action lock with the maker’s name and long top & bottom tangs. Bbl flat is marked “3-1/2″, 6 drams black powder & 2-1/8 oz. shot”. It is also marked “NOT NITRO”. Bottom of the bbl is marked “NOT FOR BALL”. Accompanied by its orig canvas & leather, blue felt lined trunk case with the maker’s label in the lid along with a 4-pc wood & brass cleaning rod & implements. Weight: Approx. 15 lbs. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl retains about 75% orig brown Damascus pattern with a slightly thinned area over the forearm. Receiver & lockplate retain 70-75% orig case colors, brilliant in the sheltered areas, turning silver elsewhere. Wood is sound with minor nicks & scratches and a few bug bites from the forend tip. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. Case is slightly stained with replaced straps & broken handle. Interior is lightly soiled with some rub damage & yellowed label, otherwise very fine. 4-55313 JR601 (5,000-8,000)
