VERY RARE CASED COGSWELL & HARRISON BIG BORE DBL RIFLE. Cal. 8 bore. SN 10354. Spectacular sidelock dbl rifle with 28-3/16″ damascus rifled bbls with flat, flat-hand matted rib, caterpillar from sight, platinum line 2-leaf express sight, rib extension third bite, dbl lump with extractors & dbl triggers. Locks are fitted with stalking safeties and it has an automatic thumb safety on the top tang. It is mounted with beautifully figured honey & chocolate streaky French walnut with full checkered splinter forearm & pistol grip stock with cheekpiece, 14-1/4″ over a solid red pad. Bbl & butt stock have sling eyes. Receiver & lockplates are lightly engraved with extremely fine foliate arabesque patterns with the maker’s name in a ribbon on each lockplate. Bbls have the maker’s name & address on top. Bbl flats have black powder proofs & are marked “10” for 10 ga. and have a subsequent proof of an “8” for 8 ga. Accompanied by a maker’s letter on letterhead entitled “Certificate of Origin” that fully identifies this rifle as having been built as a 10 bore and delivered on 28th September 1880 to a Mr. Harvey. On 22nd May 1882 this rifle was returned to be upgraded for “8g metallic case”. Letter states that this is one of the earliest dbl rifles built on this type of Victor hammerless action. Also accompanied by a modern, oak & leather, red, felt-lined trunk case compartmented for the two pieces of the rifle, two turn screws, a rnd nickel oil bottle, a brass parts box, two Cogswell & Harrison 8 bore snap caps & eight Cogswell & Harrison #8 brass cases. Drop at the heel 1-7/16″, drop at the comb 1-1/4″. Weight: Approx. 16 lbs. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Metal & stock retain most of a wonderful very professional restoration with the case colors bright & true. Stock has minor nicks & dings with the bbl retaining a vivid brown Damascus pattern. Forearm does not appear to be refinished and has a dark oil stained appearance. Mechanics are crisp, bores are bright & strong with some minor light pitting near the chambers.
