*CASED OSKAR MERKEL SUPERPOSED DBL RIFLE. Cal. 7X57 JR. SN 5024. Spectacular wartime produced rifle with 23-5/8″ superposed bbls with high matted rib, caterpillar front sight, fixed rear sight and claw mounts at the rear ends of the bbls. It has dbl bite & dbl extensions for Greener crossbolt with extractors & dbl triggers, the front trigger has a set feature. It is mounted with very nicely figured European walnut with checkered, trademark, Merkel 3-pc forearm and pistol grip stock with raised side panels and cheekpiece 14-1/8″ over a serrated horn buttplate. Bbls & buttstock have narrow European style sling swivels. Receiver has full coverage engraving of a bugling stag in a field scene on the left side, a large wild boar in a woodlands scene on the right side with a raebuck on the trigger bow. It is all surrounded by very well executed oak leaf & acorn patterns. Engraving extends about 2″ over the bbl reinforcements. Bottom of the bbl, beside the lugs, has the cal. marking, the WWII eagle “N” proof and the date “642”. The same eagle “N” proof is on the receiver. It is accompanied by a fine 4X “B. Nickel” scope in claw mounts to fit on the bbl. Also accompanied by its orig green canvas, green felt-lined, trunk case with leather trim. It has compartments for the bbls & stocked receiver with a 2-pc steel cleaning rod, two snap caps, two turn screws, a nickeled oil bottle, sling & a box of cleaning patches and 17 RWS copper tipped cartridges. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Near new, has been fired but very little. Bbls retain virtually all of their orig fine blue and the receiver most of its orig case colors turned silver. Wood is sound and retains most of its orig factory finish with a couple of small bug bites in the buttplate. Optics are crisp. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. Case is near new. This rifle was very likely produced for a high ranking Nazi official in 1942. 4-57171 JR573 (2,750-3,750)
