FINE AMES MODEL 1849 RIFLEMAN’S KNIFE. NSN. 11-3/4” spear point blade with 4-1/2” false edge. Marked “AMES MFG. CO. / CABOTVILLE / 1849” on the left ricasso, and “US / WD” on the right. The cross guard has two sets of inspector initials “WD” and “J. W. R”. The wood scales are attached to the hilt with three iron rivets and have a copper lined thong hole through the pommel. The leather scabbard has a brass throat and tip. The brass frog button is marked with an inspector initial “D”. This actual knife is pictured in The Antique Bowie Knife Book by Adam Moss, p. 36. CONDITION: Fine overall. Scattered light pitting on the sides of the blade, heavier along the spine. Crossguard has a dark patina. Some cracks and chips at the thong reinforcement on the pommel. Most of the leather gasket at the base of the blade remains. Scabbard has numerous cracks and there are heavy dents at the tip. Frog has light cracking with some scuffing at the top. 4-58192 (12,500-15,000)
