Additional Information: Please Note: The un-upholstered chair is also missing the inlay on the back crest. IMPORTANT 4-PIECE AESTHETIC MOVEMENT ROSEWOOD PARLOR SUITE ATTRIBUTED TO HERTER BROS. Third quarter 19th century, New York. Comprised of a triple-back settee, a pair of armchairs and an additional armchair conforming to the settee. Decorated overall with borders of marquetry vinery within an ebony ground. Settee and single armchair with ornate cresting, each centered with a hand painted porcelain medallion decorated with fanciful herons. Three of four pieces retain original brocade fabric with tufted backs, armrests and headrests. Curved arms with scrolled supports and 3-dimensional lion mask centering shaped overupholstered seats. Seat rails decorated with marquetry floral bouquets. Each frontal scrolled leg terminating in hairy paw feet, raised on brass capped casters. Frames delicately ornamented with incised giltwork. Reference: Herter Brothers, Furniture and Interiors for a Gilded Age by Howe/ Frelinghuysen/Voorsanger. For similar treatment of crestrail and plaque, see fig 105, page 120. Armchairs: 36″ h of back x 24″ w, 16″ h of seat. PROVENANCE: From a private Connecticut home. CONDITION: With original surfaces and rich patina. Structurally very good.
