*EXTREMELY RARE PROTOTYPE LUFTWAFFE DETACHABLE MAUSER MODEL 98 MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 8mm Mauser. SN 9399. Built on a byf 42 action, this very unusual Mauser has a 24″ bbl that is marked over the chamber area with a curious “Y” shaped mark, which has “EIN” and “AUS” on either side over “BAU” with a cricket mark and dbl-ended arrow. Receiver ring & left side of the bbl have the Nazi eagle and serial number and the right side of the receiver ring has the “135” Waffenampt in three places. It is mounted in a laminated stock & short forearm with usual bbl bands, wiping rod, sight hood & sights. Right side of the buttstock has the Nazi eagle over an “L” which is for the Luftwaffe and a larger Nazi eagle with the “135” Waffenampt. Stock has a metal joint at the front end of the receiver ring and the lever on the left side of the forestock. Pulling the lever downward allows the bbl to be rotated 90 degrees for removal. Workmanship of the detachable apparatus is somewhat crude and does not fit overly well. Accompanied by copies of pages 84-85, 187 & 287-292 from an unidentified book, detailing Mauser markings of these rifles. CONDITION: Fine, all matching numbered except the detachable apparatus. Overall retains most of its fine orig factory finish to the metal with the wood showing some oil staining on the forestock & hand guard while the buttstock appears to have been cleaned. Mechanics are fine, very bright shiny bore. 4-56801 (22,500-27,500)
