SAMUEL FINLEY MORSE BADGER (American, 1873-1919) PORTRAIT OF THE SCHOONER “FRED GRAY”. Outstanding oil on canvas ship portrait of the schooner “Fred Gray”. Two-mast black hull schooner sailing left to right with five figures aboard. Name of the ship on the bow and the stern. The Fred Gray was built in Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1869 and it’s home port was Portland, Maine and was owned by H.M. Sargent. Sailing by a white lighthouse with three-story gray building on a small island which is Execution Rocks. Execution Rocks Light is on the west end of Long Island Sound. First lit in 1850, it is still there as seen in this painting and was automated in 1979. All under a blue and white cloud sky. Signed lower left “SFM Badger 94”. Housed in an oak frame with decorative gold liner. Back of canvas reads “SFM Badger 94” also. SIZE: 22” x 36”. CONDITION: Three small patches to reverse with minor inpainting.
