*ULTRA-RARE SPRINGFIELD/WINCHESTER SNIPER RIFLE.

*ULTRA-RARE SPRINGFIELD/WINCHESTER SNIPER RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. SN 1004914. Fitted with a 27-3/8″ tapered heavy rnd bbl, marked with the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. roll mark & caliber marking over the chamber area. It has the heavy sleeve front sight band with a Lyman globe front sight & target blocks toward the rear top. It has two extra plugged holes in between the target blocks. It is built on a Springfield Armory 1903 action & mounted with a medium to heavy weight, Winchester style, target stock with sgl bbl band, flat bottom forestock; Winchester’s deep square-knob pistol grip with a Springfield Armory M.1922 checkered steel buttplate. Receiver is mounted with a Lyman 48S receiver sight with target knobs. It has the standard serrated trigger that has been altered to eliminate the military creep. Page 250 & 251 of The Springfield 1903 Rifles, Brophy shows a Winchester advertisement titled “A New Sniper’s Rifle” and has pictured two of these heavy bbled rifles with Springfield actions. Page 250 also has a close-up of a Winchester sniper with a checkered stock and p. 251 has three illustrations of the Winchester sniper rifle with the bottom of the page showing an 8-man shooting team titled the “Herrick Trophy Winners who used Winchester rifles that were built on Springfield Model 1903 receiver mechanisms.” It is unknown how many of these rifles were ever built but it stands to reason there were only a very few & survivors are basically unknown. This may be one of the only ones held in private hands. Accompanied by a copy of an article by Wayne P. Gagner from the publication U.S. Martial Arms Collector. Mr. Gagner states that early on he had owned one of these rare Winchester/Springfield 1903 sniper rifles and allowed himself to be talked out of it but was fortunate enough to find another identical rifle, the one we have here. CONDITION: About fine. Bbl retains about 90% strong orig blue with two gray bands in the blue between the scope blocks. Receiver retains most of what is probably a Winchester or arsenal finish applied when the rifle was built. Stock has a hairline in the wrist, otherwise is sound with minor nicks & scratches and retains most of an old restored finish. Mechanics are fine, brilliant shiny bore. 4-56492 JR700 (12,500-17,500)
