FINE OIL ON CANVAS GROUSE PAINTING. Wonderfully detailed painting with 29-3/4″ wide x 20-5/8″ high, exposed image, of an extremely well executed, highly detailed painting of a male ruffed grouse drumming in front of a female on the nest, all in a woodland glade. Framed in a period gold gesso milled frame. It is signed in the lower right corner “N.F. Morse 79”. This artist was actually a lady by the name of Eleanor Ecob Morse (1837-1921) who painted under a pseudo-name to have her wildlife art accepted. Apparently in the late 19th century women artists were not well accepted. She & her husband were both painters & illustrators in New York & Massachusetts. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Has had some professional restoration. Image & details are crisp & the colors are vivid & bright. Would make an outstanding addition to anyone’s gun room or den. 4-57188 JR733 (4,000-6,000)
