VERY RARE 1ST MODEL COLT SQUARE BACK NAVY REVOLVER. Cal. 36 perc. Usual configuration, 7-1/2” oct. bbl., replaced front sight with one piece walnut grips. It has the 1st model wedge screw on the bottom and tiny “U.S.” under “COLTS PATENT” on the frame. This revolver is identical to serial number 562 pictured on page 80 and 81 of “51 COLT NAVIES”, the rarest Martial Colt, only three known. The write-up in this book suggests that 100 of these revolvers were purchased by the US army and issued to the medical corp. Recent research however suggests they were issued to Commander Perry on his trip to Japan. SN 564, all matching except for the wedge which is unnumbered. CONDITION: About good, the metal retains an even cleaned medium brown patina, probably an old refinish, with some fine pitting on the rammer lever. The cylinder is smooth with no scene remaining with one small area of light pitting and a few light dings. The grips are correct Slim Jim grips, the right toe is chipped. The grip frame retains 25-30% original silver plating. The bore is strong and dark. Mechanics are a little loose but functional. 4-48920 JR718 (12,500-17,500)
