RARE 1ST YEAR PRODUCTION AINSWORTH INSPECTED MARTIALLY MARKED COLT SGL ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Colt. SN 210. Fine early Colt with bbl cut to 5-1/16″ & a brass blade sight installed. It has slanted small letter bbl 1-line address with serifs at each end. It has first type ejector rod housing with bull’s eye ejector rod head & 1-pc walnut grip with number “3472” in backstrap channel. Frame has 2-line patent numbers & “US” on left side. Various small parts have the “A” inspector initial for O.W. Ainsworth. Serial number is on bottom of bbl under ejector rod housing & on cylinder. This early revolver was likely issued to one of the frontier cavalry units or possibly New York Militia. As listed on p. 24 of Cavalry & Artillery Revolvers….A Continuing Study, Kopec & Fenn, serial number 266 was issued to Troop C, 8th Cavalry & on p. 28, serial number 215 was issued to the New York Militia. Also it is interesting to note that this revolver does not have an assembly number on loading gate & it certainly appears that this is the orig loading gate, or at minimum a very early field replacement. A consecutive numbered SAA, number “211” is being sold separately elsewhere in this auction. CONDITION: Good. All matching, as noted. No orig finish remains being a light brown to silver/gray patina overall. Bbl has numerous hammer marks on left side & overall shows heavy wear. Most of screws are somewhat battered with at least one a replacement, a replaced main spring & aforementioned replacement grips. Grip is sound with slightly rounded left toe & edges and retains 30-40% orig varnish. Timing needs adjusting, otherwise mechanics are fine. Strong bright bore with fine pitting. 4-57853 JR258 (7,500-12,500)
