VERY RARE SHIPMAN BOWIE KNIFE.

VERY RARE SHIPMAN BOWIE KNIFE. 9-3/8” clip point blade with 4-1/2” false edge. Marked “SUPBURB(sic) / W ? SHIPMAN / SHEFFIELD” on the left ricasso. The left side of the blade is etched with a picture of the Crystal Palace below the wording “AMERICA / NEW YORK EXHIBITION 1852”. The Crystal Palace was so-called because it was the first building built in America entirely of glass. The crossguard, collar, pommel and mountings on the scabbard are all German silver. The hilt is stag. Scabbard is black leather. This knife is illustrated in The BOWIE KNIFE by Norm Flayderman, p. 416. CONDITION: Fine overall. Some light pitting at the tip and edge. Slight denting on the throat and tip of the scabbard, along with some bends and cracks. 4-58191 (7,000-9,000)
