RARE FIRST YEAR PRODUCTION AINSWORTH INSPECTED MARTIALLY MARKED COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Colt. SN 211. Artillery configuration with 5-1/2″ bbl with 1-line block letter address with orig front sight. Bottom of bbl has a “P” & Henry Nettleton “HN” proofs & bears serial number “8929”. It has second type ejector rod housing with half moon ejector rod head. Frame has “U.S.” on left side with typically mismatched trigger guard & backstrap. Trigger guard has serial number “82009” & backstrap number “372” or “872” with Ainsworth small “A” at top of backstrap. It has 1-pc later replacement walnut grip without cartouche, date or inspector mark. Cylinder has “RAC” inspector initials with the number “2456” & a small “P” proof. This rare revolver undoubtedly saw Frontier service before being returned to Colt or The Springfield Armory for conversion to its current configuration. A consecutive numbered SAA, #210, is being sold separately elsewhere in this auction. CONDITION: Very good to fine, mismatched as noted. Bbl retains about 90% strong bright orig blue with muzzle wear & fine scratches, mostly on left side. Frame retains 50-65% thin original case colors on outside, brilliant & strong inside frame with some fine pitting on left side by bbl. Hammer retains 65-70% thin orig case colors. Trigger guard & backstrap retain about 50% restored blue. Grips are sound with a couple of dings in bottom & light handling & use marks. Timing needs attention & will not hold in half cock or safety notch, otherwise mechanics are fine. Strong bright bore with a scattered spot or two of light pitting.
