SPECTACULAR 1880’S UMC CARTRIDGE BOARD. Wonderful early board in its orig shadow box oak frame that is 54-1/2″ long x 41-1/2″ high, outside dimensions. Board has an orig inner frame of silvered gesso with embossed gesso plaque on the top “TRADE U.M.C. MARK” and “THE UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO.” on the bottom. Center of the backing board has a large diamond with large “U.M.C.” surmounting the vignette of three bull elk, two cows, a young bull & a calf, all in a mountain scene. Board contains about 155 centerfire & rimfire cartridges including the rare .58 RF Springfield & a number of very rare centerfire cartridges. It also contains 20 lead bullets, 16 paper shotgun shells & brass shotshell heads along with 9 brass shotshells, including the very rare 4 ga. with two of the smaller bore pcs cut away. It additionally has a display of caps, primers & wads, three copper tube exploding shells & three friction primers & most importantly a 1″ Gatling gun round. CONDITION: Very fine. Backing board vignette & red lettering are slightly sun faded but completely legible with a sharp image. It has orig wavy glass with a small broken corner & there are a few small loose chips of the frame plaster in the bottom. Outside oak frame has some chips on the bottom corners, otherwise retains a wonderful dark patina. Gesso plaques are extremely fine with a few minor cracks.
