C. BECHSTEIN “RENAISSANCE” CARVED OAK UPRIGHT PIANO. Late 19th, early 20th century. Elaborately carved oak cabinet with a 3/4 gallery of pierced scrolling vinery. Top with hinged lid, edge carved with leaf tips, sound board with original stenciled label for the Bechstein Company and the number “381”. Proper right upper edge of cabinet impressed with number “12011”. The top door, or frieze, with a rectangular pierced and carved panel of a lyre within scrolling vinery flanked by square panels centering intricately pierce carved foliate rosettes. The hinged fall opening to a full keyboard above which are two carved plaques. The first carved “RENAISSANCE/Louis & Siegfried Lovinson”. The second carved “C BECHSTEIN/Hoflieferant St Maja Konigs”. Keyboard flanked by cheeks upon which was originally mounted carvings or candle arms. Bottom door with parqueted panel above anthemion leaf moldings further flanked by elaborate pierce carved mythical winged mermaids amidst scrolling vinery. SIZE: 54-1/2″ h x 61-1/2″ w of case x 27″ d. CONDITION: Keys and hammers operational. Strings in need of professional restoration, as is majority of action. Case with original finish. Losses to moldings on proper left cheek. Additional losses in pierce carved vines. Overall good. 9-22199 (1,500-2,500)
