JOHN WARD DUNSMORE (American, 1856-1945) “FRONTICEPIECE FOR RODERICK RANDOM VOL-1”. Oil on canvas scene shows a man with gun on horseback. He points the gun at two drifters who are walking along a dirt road, one on knees pleading for mercy. In background are three soldiers on horseback galloping towards them. Back of canvas has title. The character of Roderick Random was made famous through the books of Tobias Smollett. Housed in a gilt molded wood frame. SIZE: 14-1/4” x 24”. CONDITION: Very good. 9-70885 (1,500-2,500)
